Hide His Word in Your Heart
When you open our front door, you see a storm shelter. We had planned to build one in our house under the stair well, but we were living in a trailer on our property while waiting for our home to be built. We moved out there the end of April, and the first week we were in the trailer, two tornadoes came through our area, barely missing us. So we decided to build the storm shelter right away. It is a safe place for us to go when there are bad storms.
Different circumstances cause us all to look for a safe place, a refuge, a hiding place. Where do you seek shelter? When I find myself needing reassurance, I run to the promises that God has made to us in His Word.
Most nights I wake up between 3 and 4 a.m. Sometimes I can go back to sleep, sometimes not. The other night I woke up around 4 and a passage of Scripture popped up in my mind. It gave me comfort and assurance and I told myself I should use that in one of my devotions. Then the Lord blessed me with some additional sleep. When I woke up, I remembered feeling blessed by that verse, but could not for the life of me remember what the verse was! Yet it spoke to me when I needed it. That happened because I have been in the Word and have the Word in me. God uses that to speak to me. While I can’t remember that passage that comforted me, I have another one to share with you.
Psalm 119:9–16 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O Lord; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.
We should not neglect God’s Word. We need to listen to Him. Sure, we can talk to Him with our prayers, but we need to listen to Him as well. When you hide His Word in your heart, it will speak to you in times of need. That is true even if you can’t remember the particulars later! The Word hidden in your heart will speak to you when you need to hear it. God knows what you need and when you need to hear it.
Lord thank you for giving us Your Word and its sure promises. We thank you for giving us Your Word made flesh, and that through His life and His death and His victory over death we can have certainty no matter what we face today, knowing that we are Yours. Help us to hide Your Word in our hearts that we may have a heart of wisdom. Continue to guide us and bless us and lead us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
